Fact Sheet - Safer online shopping

Updated: Mar 23

Online shopping is convenient, can be done at any time of day or night, and provides a literal world of shops just a mouse click away. Criminals know that too and use significant retail events or seasonal holidays for their scams. They may register look alike domains or send spoofed retailer emails all to scam customers of their hard-earned money or account credentials.

Five points to help you stay safer when shopping online:

1. Check the retailer website address – Do not follow a link from an email, go to the site

yourself. When you are on the site verify the spelling in the link is correct for that store.

2. Payment security - Only enter financial information on secured connections and do not

enter any personal or financial details while on free WiFi.

3. Information - Do not provide more information than needed. Do they really need your

full birth date, hair colour, and the name of your first school, to sell you a magazine subscription?

4. Unbelievable offers - Be wary of emails that offer discounts that sound too good to be

true – because they probably are!

5. Passwords – Use strong and unique passwords for each online shopping account.
